Wine Tastings
The best way to learn what you prefer is by tasting firsthand, and ideally comparing side by side. The more tastings you perform, the better you can discover the type of wines that match your preferences. This is a very personal exploration. Only you know what you will truly enjoy!
There are multiple ways to conduct wine tastings:
The first one is when the exact wines to be compared are known to the tasters. This is a good way to compare wines to assess specific differences. For example, between wineries producing the same type of wine, or from different countries, or a subset of regions within a given country (e.g. Napa Cabs versus Sonoma Cabs). The combinations are endless. The main drawback with this approach is that since the exact wines are known during the tasting, it can lead to some bias, either from preconceived expectations or vague reputation awareness.
Some tastings are referred to as horizontal tastings, where you are comparing similar wines from different producers of the same vintage.
You can also have vertical tastings, when comparing the same wine from one winery but from different vintages.
To improve the above tastings, it’s best to conduct them blind (aka semi-blind), to remove some of the possible bias. Although you know the theme (varietal or region) or exact wines of the tastings, these are not identified in the glasses being compared. You will often be surprised that the one you had thought should be your favorite is not the one you actually prefer. This is what makes blind tasting so much more interesting.
Finally, you have double blind tastings, which are completely blind, where no information about the wines is known to the taster prior to the tasing. This eliminates all opportunities for bias, and is a very powerful way to conduct a tasting and identify what truly matches your personal taste.
A fully tailored tasting can be created for you, with all the instructions needed to conduct the tasting, including which wine glasses and tasting sheets to use, and of course suggested wines and recommended quantity, to best suit the theme of your event.
